Physical Description:
The Vinaceous Amazon is a medium sized amazon measuring between 12-14 inches from head to tail and weighing 300-450 grams. Their name is derived from their vinaceous or purple-maroon colored chest and belly. Their feathers are heavily scalloped consequently their coloration is clearly evident. The bird has green back feathers with dark edging. They have a narrow red patch just above the beak. The Vinaceous Amazon has a pinky-red beak with a horn colored tip. This birds’ coloration is striking, and when excited the Vinaceous head feathers crown in a halo-like fashion very similar to the Hawk Headed Parrot. These amazon parrots are very high pet quality; only Florida residents are able to purchase, however, we require a FL drivers license to acquire one of these awesome amazons.

Genus: Amazona
Species: Vinacea
World Population: 1000-2500
Range: SE Brazil from S Bahia and W Espirito Santo south to NE Argentina, in Misiones and possibly NE Corrientes, and SE Paraguay
Habitat: Found up to 1200m (3936 ft), locally 2000m (6560 ft) in tropical and subtropical mixed evergreen forest; in Brazil humid coastal forest, in E Paraguay Araucaria angustifolia stands and Euterpeedulis woodlands.
Wild Diet: Feeds on flowers, fruits, seeds; may take cultivated crops, but impact from that is thought to be low.
Threat Summary: Loss of habitat, selective logging, colonisation and agriculture threaten remaining forests. Also, a massive bird-smuggling operation was centred in Paraguay recently, and included Amazona vinacea.
IUCN/CITES Rating: Endangered, Appendix I
Average Lifespan: The average lifespan of this bird in captivity is 30-50 years.

Sexing: Although this bird is not sexually dimorphic, the male is typically much larger than the female. For breeding purposes however a DNA test is the only true way to determine the sex of this bird.

Origin: The Vinaceous Amazon is a protected species as it is threatened by habitat loss. This parrot has become very rare in its native northeast Argentina, southeastern Brazil and eastern Paraguay.

Trainability: The Vinaceous Amazon has medium talking ability. They are extremely playful and love to spend time playing in their cages with toys. They are very acrobatic and love to swing and hang upside down. As with all birds, it is important to provide this bird with plenty of toys to chew. The Vinaceous Amazon is a great companion bird that will entertain and love those who care for them.

Loudness:Although this bird is quiet compared to some of the more boisterous amazons, it can have a somewhat high-pitched call. The Vinaceous can be very vocal during periods of excitement and play.

Pricing: They can only be purchased in the state in which you live as they are on the National Endangered Species List. We are only able to sell them to Florida residents or do a “breeders trade” across state lines. Permits are offered for out of state commerce, but we have no knowledge of one actually being issued. For pricing and availability, feel free to call our store at (954) 725-0088.
Health Guarantee of Our Birds
We have the strongest bird guarantee in the country, and more importantly, we stand behind our guarantee. The guarantee is simple: We guarantee that we are selling you a perfectly healthy bird. To verify that guarantee, within five days you need to go to an Avian Vet and get any and all testing you prefer to do on your bird, at your expense. We can guide you as to the tests we suggest. If the results are not perfect but the bird can be easily treated, then we pay for all medications and all treatment. If the results are unacceptable then we either replace your bird or refund 100% of the purchase price of your bird, at our option.

Bird Guarantee only lasts for the first five days
Since we have 100% control over the bird's environment at our store, but have no control over the bird once it leaves, we can only guarantee the bird for the first five days. We guarantee that when the bird leaves the store that it has been properly socialized, and that it is 100% healthy. Your new bird has been given an excellent start here at Golden Cockatoo, and it is now your responsibility to properly care for your bird. We are always here to help you take the best care of your bird with the biggest variety and best quality bird products available in the world.

Lifetime Guarantee on our Birds
We guarantee that if during your lifetime, you are no longer able to properly care for your bird, or give your bird the attention it need's, we will accept the bird back on consignment and will find another great home for your bird. We do take a 40% commission and charge a nominal daily fee to feed and clean, but you can rest assured that you always have a place for your bird should the need arise. We are the only store in Florida to offer this guarantee as of the year 2000.
