Handfed Baby Lovebirds
Hand-fed Lovebirds make good companions, while parent-raised birds are unfriendly and are not recommended.
Lovebirds, contrary to popular belief, do not need to be kept in pairs if they are socialized for at least one hour a day and taken out of the cage frequently. As a general rule, males are much friendlier than females. Females can make good pets as well, but they require a little more know-how and a lot more patience.
Physical Description: Lovebirds come in a variety of colors – from green to blue, violet, yellow, or even albino and everything in between. Their beaks look like they are too big for their tiny heads and their eyes are large as well. This gives them quite the endearing appearance.
Average Lifespan: 10 – 15 years
Sexing: You cannot determine the sex just by looking at a Lovebird. The only sure-fire way to figure out the sex is to do a DNA test. However, most Lovebirds can be sexed based on their behavior. Males are typically very laid back and loving, while females can be very hyper, inquisitive and slightly aggressive.
Trainability: Hand-fed Lovebirds make wonderful pets, but parent-raised Lovebirds can be very difficult to tame. Males tend to make better pets than females because they are less “nesty.” During breeding season, females may become aggressive and attempt to make a nest. They will choose an area to nest in and defend it with all their might. During this time, they are usually unhandleable. Lovebirds can be trained to fly to you on command, and follow simple commands such as “turn around.” They enjoy bathing and appreciate shallow bowls of water.
Loudness: Lovebirds are fairly quiet birds. They are quite vocal and seem to speak their mind very well. You will come to understand your Lovebird’s vocalizations. They have a different noise for when they are happy, angry, or excited, etc. They make great apartment birds.
