Physical Description: Eclectus Parrots are one of the few species that are sexually dimorphic. This means that you can actually tell whether the parrot is male or female just by looking at the color of the plumage. Males are almost entirely green with red under the wings, and a bit of blue on the shoulders. They are known for their candy corn beaks, which are smooth and shiny and look just like candy corn (but without the white bit)! Females, on the other hand, are primarily red with purple or blue stomachs and shoulders. Their beaks are smooth and shiny as well, but they are black in color. The eyes of both the male and female are yellow.
** A special note about Eclectus Parrots — Eclectus Parrots have very particular dietary requirements. They need lots of fresh vegetables and plenty of calcium. Many enjoy fresh fruit as well, but variety is key. They also should not be fed foods with artificial coloring as it tends to mess with their feathers. An Eclectus that has been eating artificially colored foods may molt out his green feathers and grow yellow ones instead! When their dietary needs are not being met, these birds may resort to feather plucking. Zupreem Natural Pellets combined with Volkman Avian Science Super Eclectus seed diet is a good foundation for their primary diet.
Average Lifespan: 30 – 40 years
Sexing: As was mentioned before, Eclectus Parrots are one of the few parrot species that are sexually dimorphic. The males will always be green, and the females will always be red. It doesn't get any easier than that!
Origin: South Pacific (Solomon Islands and near New Guinea)
Train ability: Eclectus Parrots are very calm birds, and are typically easy to train. They have been described as the "sit there and look pretty" birds because they are just so easy-going. They are not as destructive as most parrot species, and enjoy being out and about with their caretakers. Most will learn to talk, although there are a few who never do. Those that do talk will have a vocabulary of about 5 – 10 words or phrases. Eclectus Parrots have been known to "day dream" on their perches. Because of this, it is best to talk to your parrot before reaching out to him – just to make sure you have his attention. Otherwise, you may startle him and receive a quick bite in retaliation. They also tend to be slightly more sensitive to their environments, and do better in calm, quiet households. As well, even though many people gravitate towards the females due to their striking plumage, males tend to be less aggressive and therefore are usually better pet quality.
Loudness: Eclectus parrots are fairly quiet birds. They will call to their caretakers from time to time, just to make sure they are not forgotten. Repetitive or obnoxious calls are easily avoided by working with your parrot and teaching him to speak so that he is able to use words instead of squawks.
Pricing: Eclectus Parrots are moderately priced. Feel free to call our store at (954) 725-0088 for pricing and availability.
