Physical Description: Blue Throated Macaws are frequently mistaken for Blue and Gold Macaws, and for good reason. At first glance, there is no obvious difference between the two. However, if you are lucky enough to see them side by side, the difference becomes obvious. Blue Throated Macaws maintain that same beautiful blue and yellow contrast as the Blue and Gold. Everything on the upper half of the bird – their heads, back, wings, and top of the tail – is blue. Everything on the under side – their chest and belly, under their wings, and under their tail – is yellow. However, there is a slightly different hue to the blue of a Blue Throated Macaw when compared to a Blue and Gold Macaw. Also, the Blue and Gold Macaw has a black throat, while the Blue Throated Macaw, obviously, has a blue throat. Blue Throated Macaws are also somewhat smaller than Blue and Gold Macaws.

Average Lifespan: 40 – 60 years
Sexing: Sexing these birds requires a DNA test, as they are not sexually dimorphic and you cannot tell the sex just by looking at them.
Origin: Central Bolivia, and some of Argentina
Trainability: As with most of the large Macaws, Blue Throats are not for everyone. They are mischievous and playful, and can become quite destructive if bored. We recommend purchasing a weaned, handfed baby. Birds naturally fledge from the nest and their mothers, so hand-feeding a baby you intend to keep for life is not the best idea. It will only cause more aggression later when the bird becomes confused and frustrated that it cannot leave the “nest.” Blue Throat Macaws learn quickly and are easy to train with a little effort. They can easily develop a good vocabulary, knowing a few key words and phrases to get what they want. Most Macaws are easy to trick train, and the Blue Throat is no exception. In fact, it is a good idea to teach your Macaw to perform a few tricks on command in order to distract them from negative behaviors later on in life. Blue Throat Macaws enjoy showers and will often bathe with their owners. Many enjoy being outdoors as well, so it is good to find a way to allow your Caninde to play outside safely. In general, we’ve found that Blue Throat Macaws tend to be fairly laid-back parrots. They enjoy simply sitting and spending time with you, and are less apt to bite than the other large Macaws. They tend to become aggressive with outsiders, so it is a great idea to socialize your Blue Throated Macaw with many people.
Loudness: Like all Macaws, the Blue Throat Macaw can be pretty vocal. Because of this, we don’t recommend them (or any of the large Macaws) for Apartment living. If you feel that a quieter, smaller bird is more appropriate for you, there are still many species to choose from.

We guarantee that when the bird leaves the store that it has been properly socialized, and that it is 100% healthy.
