Physical Description:
Lilac-crowned Amazons are very pretty birds with predominantly green coloration. Their distinguishing feature is the light purple on their heads, from which their name is derived. Additionally, they have a splash of contrasting deep maroon above the beak. Lilac-crowned Amazons measure approximately 13 inches from head to tail, but are not quite as full-bodied as the larger Mealy or Double yellow-headed Amazon. This places them in the category of medium-sized parrots.
Average Lifespan: 40-60 years.
Sexing: The Red-headed Amazon is not sexually dimorphic therefore a DNA test is necessary to determine the sex of your bird.
Origin: North-eastern Mexico
Trainability: The Red-headed Amazon is a playful bird who loves to chew on wood. Although they are not the best talkers, they can be trained to speak given diligent guidance. Red-headed Amazons can be somewhat temperamental which can be challenging to a novice bird owner. However, they are extremely quick learners and are amenable to change in most situations. It is important to provide consistent discipline throughout the stages of this bird’s life in order to avoid aggressive behaviors.
