Even though these birds need to have full flight and cannot normally be handled, they are simply charming, captivating, and peaceful to watch. It might be said that they are the aquarium enthusiast's birds because they are similar to fish in this regard. Male canaries have become known for their beautiful songs, and Lady Gouldian finches will take your breath away with their spectacular color and beauty. Zebra finches breed so prolifically that they are a great vehicle for teaching children about how birds mate and have babies.
Most finches need to be in pairs - one male, one female - or large groups. Canaries on the other hand, have a reputation of needing to be housed alone. This is because a male canary sings only to attract a mate. If a female is already present then he has no need to sing. However, keep in mind that finches and canaries are social birds by nature, so keeping a male canary in a small cage with nothing to do but sing is not the nicest idea. If you wish to keep a single male canary, make sure he has a large cage with enough room for him to fly, and several toys to entertain him during the day. Many canaries appreciate small nesting materials such as timothy hay, bits of torn newspaper, and coconut fiber. Even males have been known to try their hand at making a nest from time to time. Providing these materials eliminate boredom for your bird, and the happier your bird is, the more it will sing.
Finches and canaries enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables from time to time, and we have found that their favorites include broccoli, cucumber, and romaine lettuce. Running these foods through a food processor will help your birds to get the maximum nutrition from them. Hard boiled eggs (with their shells - we promise the shells don't hurt the birds) can be given as well. The eggs provide an "egg"cellent source of calcium, which is very important to breeding females. Remember - better nutrition equals happier, healthier birds, and most seed diets on the market today are simply not a completely balanced diet.
Individual species sometimes have specific needs. Click on the photos below to find more detailed information about each species.
Testing expenses are your responsibility; should there be any minor health issues that require treatment, we pay for all medications and all medical treatment at a Veterinarian of our choice. If a Vet exam reveals a life-threatening disease or serious genetic issues, then we will either replace your bird or give you a full refund of the purchase price.
All of the above having been said, we will not nor have we ever sold a bird which we thought was ill. Since parrots hide when they are sick, we can not always determine the true health of a parrot visually. It is for this reason that we offer the above guarantee; you are not required to test your parrot, but if you do, we have a strong guarantee to insure that you are starting out with a healthy parrot.
We look forward to a long relationship with our customers and their birds. Our goal is to be with you for the next 30-50 years, providing safe toys, proper diets, and non-toxic cages and play gyms for your companion parrot.
(Please note that all diagnostic testing is the responsibility of the buyer.)
